The GBHS Dream Makers Youth Garden Club is designed to engage young people in gardening while connecting them to stories of individuals whose lives were shaped by nature, sustainability, or community. Through hands-on activities, the program combines lessons about plants, environmental stewardship, and personal growth in a creative and meaningful way.
Key Activities:
- Planting Seeds & Growing Crops: Youth will learn about soil, water, sunlight, and the basics of cultivating vegetables. These activities will be paired with inspiring stories of pioneers and activists who used nature to drive change in their communities.
- Garden Design & Planning: Participants will design layouts for their gardens, fostering creativity and spatial thinking. They’ll also draw inspiration from public space innovators and urban gardening leaders.
- Storytelling Sessions: Sessions will feature figures like George Washington Carver, Wangari Maathai, and others, highlighting their contributions to sustainability and inspiring youth to reflect on their bond with nature.
- Composting & Sustainability Education: Lessons in composting and waste reduction will teach eco-conscious practices, connecting the importance of sustainability to the legacies of environmental leaders.
- Harvest & Community Sharing: As crops grow, children will learn the value of giving back by sharing the harvest with their community, much like efforts to fight hunger and promote food justice.
Expected Outcomes:
- Youth will experience personal growth as they care for their gardens, developing persistence, patience, and responsibility while drawing inspiration from historical figures.
- The program will foster environmental awareness, helping participants understand ecological systems and the importance of sustainability for future generations.
- Through gardening and sharing their produce, they will feel a stronger connection to their community, building a sense of purpose and empowerment.
- They’ll gain health and nutrition education, learning how growing their own food can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
By cultivating not only plants but also a sense of empowerment and environmental consciousness, the Dream Makers Youth Garden Project helps young people understand how their actions can positively impact the world, much like the figures they learn about in the program.Â
